QUICK ANSWER

Muddy paws are easiest to manage when you clean them before your dog walks through the house. A small entryway routine can keep floors, rugs and furniture much cleaner.

1. Remove loose mud first

If mud is starting to dry, gently wipe or brush away loose debris before adding water.

2. Rinse or use a paw cleaner

Use lukewarm water or a purpose-built paw cleaner cup to loosen dirt around the pads and between the toes. Avoid very hot water.

3. Dry thoroughly

Use a clean absorbent towel and dry between the toes as well as the paw surface.

4. Check for irritation

Look for small stones, ice, road salt, cracks or redness. Persistent irritation should be discussed with a veterinarian.
